June, 2001

Sedalia, Missouri

We're spending most of our time in Independence, getting some work done (hey, we're not retired yet!). However we did take time to go to the Newmar International Rally in Sedalia. I believe there were almost 900 RVs there, and it was a fun and educational week.

One thing we did at the rally was weigh the RV (recommended for safety, since being overweight is a major cause of blowouts and accidents). We're safe overall, but we found out that our passenger side front tire has 500 pounds more weight on it than the driver's side. I guess somebody needs to lose some weight! Haha!

We took a little bus tour of the area, titled the "Antebellum Trail". I still don't know what "Antebellum" means, but it was interesting anyway. (I have to admit that the most interesting part was stopping at Russell Stovers at the end of the tour for free chocolate samples!)

We did visit an old schoolhouse (below) and learned what it was like in the 1800's (especially in the summer, since it was hot!)

We also toured an old hotel called Rosalyn Heights, which is now a headquarters for the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Another interesting sight was this State Farm agent's sign -- notice the name. I wonder if he gets a lot of business?

As luck would have it, there was a car show at the fairgrounds also, so I took plenty of photos there...

(Watch my Awesome-Screens.com web site for a screen saver featuring these cars, and also check out the current Antique Autos Screen Saver!)

July, 2001

Kansas City, Missouri

We spent most of July in Independence again, but with a couple diversions...

The only traveling we did in July was to a software conference ("The Shareware Industry Conference") in St. Louis. Of course this was much too boring to show photos of, but it was very fun for a geek like me. In case you haven't guessed yet, my main business is writing software and selling it using the "shareware", or "try-before-you-buy" marketing methods. You can download free versions to try out on your computer before you buy it, essentially like a free sample... and I love free samples (yes, I'm thinking about chocolate again)! Anyway, see the link to Cottonwood Software below for an idea of what that's all about.

Now for some fun ... The Cows on Parade are in Kansas City this summer, with about 200 cows placed all over the city. They are life-sized fiberglass cows painted and modified in every way imaginable, usually with some cow-related theme (or at least a pun involved). We spent a few days tracking them down, and I've created a screen saver with photos of 60 of them. Here are a couple samples:

Well, that's about all for now. We'll be staying around Kansas City all summer and fall to get some work done, and then we'll be heading to Mesa, Arizona for the winter. When we're in K.C. we actually stay in a great little RV park in Independence, Campus RV Park. It's a clean & friendly little park with all the ameneties we need, and with a lot of things to do in the area.
